Do's and Don’ts of Watch Buying

You’ve got the urge to purchase a new timepiece, but with all the styles, brands, and varieties out there - where do you begin? There are many factors to consider when choosing a watch, so buyers be sure to keep the below Do's and Don’ts in mind:

Do Consider the Occasion
Whether you are looking for a timepiece for daily wear, physical activities, or a black tie dinner, today’s wrist fashions are specifically built for each occasion. Consider where you plan to wear your timepiece, see if you find one to your liking that could be multi-purposed or if you should opt for purchasing more than one watch.

Don’t Assume All Watch Straps Are Created Equal

Watches typically come paired with either a bracelet or strap. A bracelet style band is heavier, made from metal with interconnecting links. These links can be added to or removed to adjust to the wearer’s wrist. These bands also typically last longer as they are made from more durable materials. A strap style band has two pieces that fasten together made from materials like leather, faux leather, nylon, or rubber. Straps are easy to replace and change out to give a single watch multiple looks. Before purchasing, make sure the watch supports interchangeable straps so you can take it from daily wear to evening wear with minimal effort.

Do Consider the Materials
Watches (and bands) can be made from a variety of materials all offering different benefits and drawbacks. While ceramic is more expensive and stronger than the widely used steel, it can chip. Resin though is a great choice for a sports watch as it’s water and UV resistant and resists temperature damage and cracking. Weigh the advantages of all materials used in a watch before making a final choice.

Don’t Forget About Extra Features
You may not need a timepiece with all the frills for casual wear, but many offer some additional features than just telling time. Some watches have a higher water resistant classification while others offer world-time functions. Others can be equipped with GPS or act as a stopwatch. Keep these extra features in mind, some may be beneficial for you!

Do Invest in a Watch Case
When not in use, you need a proper place to store your timepiece (and no, just sitting on your dresser won’t cut it). Watch boxes help to protect the watch from scratches or damage while also providing an attractive way to display your collection. If you are considering an automatic watch, a watch winder case is essential for keeping it operating when not worn for extended periods of time.
