Steve Kivel of Central Watch located in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal has some tips on buying and caring for vintage watches.

  • Any watch made prior to 1960 won’t have what’s referred to as “Incabloc” system or shock-resistance. A watch is considered much more fragile without this.

  • You should look for the “triple signs”. The movement, the dial, and the case should be individually signed. If all three don’t appear, the watch may have been messed with and some parts may not be original.

  • If you need to service your watch, go to a professional for maintenance. A professional will be able to dismantle, check under a microscope, oil and polish your watch.

  • It is important to keep the polishing and up keep to the professionals! At-home solutions and cleaners can contain chemicals that can eat away at your watch.
