Astronaut Dave Scott’s Moon Worn Bulova Watch Up for Auction
Little known fact: when astronauts are sent to the moon, they are given a NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster chronograph to use on their missions. These timepieces are forever the property of the United States government - so you can imagine the chances of owning a space worn watch are slim to say the least.
That is until now..
Apollo 15 Astronaut Dave Scott’s personal Bulova chronograph is up for auction - the only personal watch in history worn on the surface of the moon. Turns out, Scott carried a Bulova-made wristwatch and stopwatch on board Apollo 15 as a backup should his Omega malfunction. This decision clearly paid off as following his second moonwalk, Scott discovered the crystal had gone missing from his Speedmaster. Taking the Velcro watch strap from his Omega, Scott strapped on his Bulova-made backup and headed out for his third and final excursion onto the lunar surface.
The chronograph still has residue on it from not only Scott’s time on the moon, but also wear and tear from re-entry and will be sold by RR Auction in its upcoming space sale. Bidding begins online on October 15th with the live auction on October 22nd in the auction’s Boston Gallery.
