TAG Heuer to Help Auto Racing Return to Switzerland
After a roughly 60 year absence, car racing is set to make a triumphant return to Switzerland - exclusively with electric race cars. While the Swiss government is technically behind the new regulation relaxations, credit for the return of motorsports to Geneva may ultimately be due to Swiss watch maker TAG Heuer and its new CEO Mr. Jean-Claude Biver.
TAG Heuer is one of the founding partners and backers of Formula E, and are intent on helping to make it a world class racing event. Mr. Biver leveraged TAG Heuer’s relationship with Formula E into a political movement to help convince the Swiss government to allow racing on the streets of Switzerland once again. Jean-Claude Biver comments that he is hopeful about Formula E making a Swiss debut – ideally for the 2016/2017 season.
Switzerland imposed a country-wide ban on motor racing following the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans, where a serious crash caused large fragments of racing car debris to fly into the crowd, leading to the death of over 80 spectators and driver Pierre Lavegh.
