Baselworld News - Top Headlines (Part 1)

Grand Central Watch
With only 2 days left of the show, all eyes are focused on Baselworld 2015 to see what trends the watch and jewelry industry are anticipating this coming year. Here’s a roundup of some of the shows highlights and top headlines thus far:

New Tests Strengthen Swiss Watch Quality - Omega and the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) announced a stringent new watch certification. The new certification to be given to Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer watches is validated by METAS, representing a new quality norm. To receive it, a watch must “be resistant to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss; must perform within a tolerance of 0 and 5 seconds per day; be tested for autonomy (the power reserve without winding) and for water resistance.”

Hublot Enters New Price Territories - Already having tourbillons costing well over $100k as well as some pieces in the $15k-$20k range, Hublot lacks the middle - until now. Introducing their very first alarm watch with a manufacture movement inside as well as a perpetual calendar with a micro movement, the bran will be able to move into the $50k - $100k category.

Wearable Technology - The big story of Baselworld, TAG Heuer is teaming up with Google and Intel to make an Android Wear smartwatch. TAG is looking to get new consumers (younger consumers) excited to dress up their wrists. As Jean-Claude Biver, chief executive of TAG, said: “If young people get used to wearing a watch, it’s very easy to sell them…It’s a gateway.”

Rado Highlights Plasma Ceramic Technology - This groundbreaking form of modern alchemy will be featured on new models of existing collections such as the Rado HyperChrome and the Rado DiaMaster. This plasma ceramic is a metallic looking high-tech ceramic that does not contain any metal.
