Men's Fashion: Find Your Watch Size

When choosing a new watch, you may have a preferred brand in mind - however choosing the right watch for your wrist is just as important. Why? We naturally notice if something seems off, it’s hardwired into our DNA. Proportions matter. Much like how you don’t want to wear a frumpy suit jacket, an oversized timepiece can certainly change the aesthetic of an outfit.

To ensure your next timepiece fits you, proportionally, keep these things in mind.

Watch Case Diameter vs. Wrist Size
Men’s watches typically range from 38mm to 45mm, so how do you figure out which works for you? Start by measuring your wrist, just below the wrist bone where you would normally wear the band.

Don’t have measuring tape? Take a piece of paper and mark your size off with a pen - then use a ruler to measure the length. Or for a rough estimate/quick measuring trick, take a dollar bill (6 inches long) and see how much of it will wrap around your wrist.

Rule of thumb: smaller the wrist, smaller the watch; larger the wrist, larger the watch. If your wrist is 6 to 7 inches, small to medium diameter cases (38mm - 42mm) are best. Those with wrists larger than 7 inches will be more proportional with cases 42mm - 45mm.

Band Fit
When it comes to your watch band, you should take the case diameter and divide it by two to determine the ideal width of your strap. Be careful on putting too large of a band on a small diameter piece, it will throw off proportion.

The fit should be comfortable, not too tight that it leaves indents to your skin after removal, but not too loose that it slides all over the place. At the narrowest point of your wrist, one finger should fit between the band and skin.

Should you have a watch band that is too big or too small for your wrist, it’s time to resize. Feel free to bring your timepiece to Central Watch for a quick adjustment!
