3 Mistakes You May Be Making with Your Watch

What was once considered a tool to merely tell time has evolved into much more. Not only are watches an amazing piece of engineering, they have also become a dominant accessory in the fashion industry.

Whatever your reason for wearing a watch - there's one thing we can all agree on: avoiding these common watch mistakes.

1. Not knowing your timepiece’s functions.
Some timepieces do more than simply tell the time. The more functions - better referred to as complications - they have, the more difficult they are to design, assemble, and repair. This plays into its overall value and cost. Some of the more common complications include:
  • Chronograph: One of the most popular watches, but its function is hardly used. A chronograph is essentially a fancy word for stopwatch or timer.
  • GMT:  Stands for Greenwich Mean Time and is the “0” point on the 24 hour scale of international timezones. A proper GMT watch has a 24 hour format hand that indicates a second time zone in addition to the other hands.
  • TourbillonThe complication was patented by master watch maker - Abraham Louis Breguet (name ring a bell?). French for “whirlwind,” the tourbillon is a mechanism that literally spins on itself. Originally created in an attempt to improve accuracy, this complication is still included in some expensive modern watches as a novelty and demonstration of watchmaking skill.
2. Wearing the wrong timepiece at the wrong time.
Just like your clothes, your timepieces are seasonal. More specifically, your watch bands. During the warmer months opt for nylon, rubber, or silicone straps as they are less susceptible to the effects of salt water, sand, and sweat than leather for example.

You not only want to make sure you are wearing a watch that is seasona;y appropriate but occasion appropriate as well. A black tie event calls for a nice dress watch, but a day at the beach lends itself to a more outdoor friendly option.

3. Forgetting to care for your timepiece.
Just like your car requires a regular oil change, your timepiece is in need of servicing as well. Good watches hold their value so you’ll want to keep them in their best shape to preserve them for years to come. This means bringing them in for regular services and cleanings.
