Things to Consider When Caring for Watches

While you want your watch to last for years or even generations, like anything else it will show signs of wear and tear over time.

In order to protect and preserve your timepiece, it’s important to not only be aware of physical threats but the invisible factors that can harm your watch as well.

  • Vibrations: Certain watches aren’t equipped for vibrations that come with playing popular summer sports like tennis or golf. To avoid damaging the movement, consider the type of activity you are doing and choose your timepiece accordingly.
  •  Temperature: As mentioned in previous blogs, watches don’t do well when exposed to extreme temperatures. Anything above 140 degrees Fahrenheit can reduce the battery life as well as affect the viscosity of the lubricants. Avoid leaving your timepiece in direct sunlight (just consider how hot the sun can make a room or the inside of your car.)
  • Magnetism: Most watches are designed to withstand the magnetic fields that are present in daily life however repeated or very long contact with magnetic fields can affect your timepiece and its movement. As such, try to keep your watch away from electronic units like magnets, speakers/audio equipment, mobile phones, etc.
  • Water-Resistance: A watch’s water resistance can deteriorate naturally due to aging, normal wear and tear or accidental impacts to the crown. If you notice condensation appear under the glass of your timepiece - that’s one sure fire way to realize the water resistance is damaged. We recommend annual pressure testing for water resistance to ensure your timepiece is protected.
