Heuer Watch Sets Record at Sotheby’s Geneva
A Tag Heuer timepiece once owned by a Formula One racing driver exceeded expectations at the most recent Sotheby’s Geneva sale. While it didn’t lead the event in sales as a Patek Philippe pocket watch did (selling for $475,488), it did fetch a record price of $226,663.

The Heuer sold dates back to 1972, prior to Heuer’s 1985 merger with Techniques d’Avant Garde (Tag). It was gifted to Formula One driver, Ronnie Peterson by Jack Heuer, great-grandson of the brand’s founder, engraved with will wishes on the case back.
This Heuer Carrera chronometer with a Calibre 12 Manufacture, Reference 1158, was sold after a 10 minute bidding battle between six collectors. As sited in Luxury Daily, it came with a 100 gram gold bar commemorating the Prix Rouge et Blanc Joseph Siffert award presented to Peterson for his performance during the 1972 German Grand Prix at Nürburgring.
The timepiece was listed at $975 with an expected winning bid between $10,000 and $20,000.
Aside from the Heuer, Patek Phillipe’s pocket watch dating from 1973 led the event in sales. This particular reference had a minute repeating perpetual calendar function with moon phases and is said to be one of only two models in white gold. Following this was a 1926 Art Deco desk timepiece crafted by Vacheron Constantin as well as another Patek - a 1941 stainless steel watch with black dial and Breguet numerals.
