Three Things You Didn’t Know About TAG Heuer

Oftentimes when discussing brands with years of heritage, there are many interesting stories that go along with it. TAG Heuer has over 150 years of luxury timepiece creation under its belt, so there’s no shortage of history here. Initially focused on luxury timepieces, stopwatches and athletic timekeeping applications, there is much more than meets the eye surrounding the brand.

Here are a few facts you might not know about:

Fastest Measurement of Time

In 1916, a technological breakthrough came from Heuer. The Mikrograph was the first mechanical stopwatch of its time with the capacity to be able to measure 1/100th of a second. The movement rates were 10 times faster than the chronographs of its time that were considered to be ‘fast’. This is largely why the Heuer company would be the main timekeeping watch for the upcoming Olympic games.

Sports Heritage

Heuer’s initial fascination with sports gave him the opportunity to create things for something he felt very passionate about. This was primarily focused around stopwatches for sporting applications. During the 1920’s, all Olympic games were timed by Heuer chronographs. Additionally, in 1933, the brand released the Heuer Autavia, which was the first dashboard stopwatch used on racing oriented cars. Even to this day, timepieces such as the Formula 1 clearly showcase the divine passion for the sporting world that lives within the brand to this day.

First Watch In Space

A very little known fact behind the brand is that the first Swiss Watch in space was actually a Heuer. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy made good on his promise to the nation and successfully placed a man into orbit. This man was John Glenn, who sported a Heuer 2915A stopwatch on top of his suit. There was a custom strap made for the nature of his trip.

Do you watch 60 minutes? That ticking you hear during the intro, as well as the watch in the background is a Heuer!
