About Mondaine Watches - Available at Central Watch
Have you spotted our new kiosk in the Graybar Passage of Grand Central Terminal yet? If so you may have noticed the variety of Mondaine timepieces we have on display. As we're offering a unique selection of Mondaine watches for purchase - we wanted to give you a bit of background on this classic Swiss brand:
Established in 1951, Mondaine has been producing and distributing the Swiss Railway watch for wrists, tables, and walls worldwide. Widely considered to be one of the “10 Classic Swiss Watch Designs,” the simple and sleek design and distinctive red seconds hand have made Mondaine timepieces uniquely successful around the world.
Mondaine's Beginnings:
In 1944, designer and engineer Hans Hilfiker created a modernist clock with an easy to read black and white face for the Swiss Federal Railways. Three years later, the model was enhanced with a striking red second hand that was shaped after the stationmaster’s hand held signal. And thus, a classic was born - with currently more than 3,000 still ticking on station concourses and platforms throughout Switzerland. There’s even a selection in London’s Design Museum where Sir Terence Conran commissioned their installation as permanent, functional exhibits, yet today – 65 years after the clock’s creation.
Official Swiss Railways Watch Collection:
In 1986 Mondaine took the blueprint of the iconic Official Swiss Railways Clock designed by Hilfiker and turned it into a watch collection. The collection includes Sport Watches, the Evo, Simply Elegant, Classic, and Stop2go designs.
Mondaine Helvetica Collection:
Helvetica® meets wristwatch. The date aperture has been moved off its traditionally central axis position to fit in with the typography on the dial. Acknowledging both, the font and the first in the collection of this new family member, the Helvetica® number "1" with its famous curved crossbar, was cleverly used as the model for the lugs.
