Water Resistance FAQs
Water resistance is a pretty common feature for watches today - but what exactly does it mean? Find out the answer to this, and more frequently asked questions, below!
What does it mean if a watch is “waterproof?”
Trick question! Waterproof implies that no water or moisture could ever get into a watch to damage the moment, however - under certain circumstances it can happen. Instead, we measure a watch’s ability to withstand water with the term water resistance.

What does it mean if a watch is marked as “water resistant?”
A water resistant watch means it can endure, to some degree, water. For most with a water resistant stamp that means some “accidental wetting.” For others, listed as water resistant 20 ATM/200 Meters - you’re certainly safe for water activities and some recreational scuba diving.
What is an atmosphere(ATM)?
This is a measurement that denotes the amount of pressure a watch can withstand, not to be confused with with depth a watch can be worn. 1 atmosphere or ATM for short is about 10 meters or 30 feet.
Can I go swimming with my timepiece?
Check to see what your watch is labeled - if it is marked as water resistant 10 ATM, you can wear it during recreational water activities like swimming or surfing. Anything lower than 10 ATM, you’re better keeping it off for water activity.
Should I have my watch pressure tested?
Definitely! It is absolutely necessary for any watch that is exposed to moisture. Pressure testing determines whether or not there are any leaks in the case of the watch. A failed test indicates that the seals must be changed. Annual testing is recommended, but for those with more of an active/water lifestyle - you may want to have it tested a few times a year. Repeated use in salt water can likely cause some wear and tear on the watch which will lower the water resistance over time.
