Daylight Saving 101
Get ready to spring forward this weekend, Sunday marks Daylight Saving Time. And while our phones, tablets, computers, and TVs may automatically adjust - don’t forget to reset any timepieces or clocks throughout your home.
If you’re disgruntled about losing an hour of sleep, wondering who is responsible for this clock changing phenomenon - see below for some DST 101 (it may not make you any less annoyed, but you’ve at least learned some fun facts):
- Why do we have daylight saving time? You can thank Ben Franklin for that. Franklin introduced the idea back in 1784 when he was woken up at 6am to find the sun already out - the earliest he’d noticed. Franklin argued if people rose with the sun and went to bed earlier at night - it would replace hours of expensive candle use with free morning daylight.
- Fewer than half the countries globally observe Daylight Saving Time. Only 48 states in the US observe is. Hawaii, most of Arizona, and US territories of Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands choose to ignore it.
- Why do we still observe DST? Economics could be one answer. Some studies suggest we spend more money when it’s sunny out. If it is light out after work or school, people tend to spend more at the shops.
- Daylight Saving Time has also been known to increase physical activity - especially in children. Kids are more likely to play outside after school as the sun stays up for longer.
And remember, if resetting your timepiece is causing any frustrations - feel free to come by our shop in Grand Central’s 45th Street Passageway anytime next week and we’d be happy to adjust it for you, on the house.
