Keeping Your Timepiece Timeless

Watches aren’t just a piece of jewelry, they are an investment. Much like a home or a car, proper care and maintenance is necessary in keeping your timepiece functioning at a peak level of performance - not to mention maintaining its value. So whether you have a new timepiece to add to your collection, or a vintage one that’s been in the family for years - here are some simple tips on how to keep your timepiece, timeless:

Temperature:
Be mindful of the temperature and avoid extremes! Too high a temperature may cause the watch to malfunction or shorten the battery life, much like too low a temperature may cause irregular timekeeping.

Cleanings:
Use a soft cloth and wipe down your watches regularly. Clean off smudges, accumulated dirt or oil that can cause premature wear.

It’s also important to care for the watch bands. Metal watch bands collect dust and perspiration and if not cleaned regularly, can cause staining and irritation of the skin. While metal straps can often be cleaned carefully with water, leather straps can weaken and tear when wet.

Any moisture on the strap should be blotted with a soft cloth or towel and air dried. Occasionally, the strap can be cleaned with a dampened soft cloth to get out any slot residue and soil. Another detriment to leather straps is perfume. Be sure to apply it and give it time to dry before adding your timepiece to your wrist.

Everyday Activities:
Consider things you undergo daily and choose your watch accordingly. If you plan to play a sport that day, wear one of your rubber or nylon watch bands. If you must wear the leather band be sure to clean it immediately after as sweat can be damaging.

If you are bathing, washing dishes, or surrounded by water in some other way - it’s always a good idea to remove your timepiece. Most watches can withstand splashing but very few leather bands can stand up to moisture.
