We've seen it happen over the years with new, technological advances (like the tablet), so it's not too shocking to hear of a smartwatch. In fact, big companies like Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, and Google are linked to creating this new device (Sony's product is already on the market and Casio has released its new range).

Though even with some smartwatches available for purchase, they are only covering the basics. The real turning point will happen when the device has the ability to interact with different devices (speakers, phones, TVs, other devices).

With the industry being so new, there are still many different approaches.

Here is an excerpt from BBC's article:

"Smartwatches can already be split into three or four categories," says senior analyst Josh Flood, of ABI Research.

"There are notification watches - the really basic ones which just link to the phone, voice-capable smart watches which is a really cool idea and health and fitness smartwatches for heart rate and running."

Others see even greater potential.

"Through NFC [near field communication], could you transfer travel cards to the watch?" says Skooks Pong, vice president of Synapse, a company working with Nike to develop its FuelBand activity tracker/watch hybrid.

"Who knows where it will go but I would love to be at a point where I could walk into the store, tap my wrist and pay for whatever it is I'm buying."
So when will the turning point happen? Apparently Apple is coming close. The company was just recently awarded a patent for a 'curved battery for electronic devices.' Now since a curved battery isn't necessary for an iPhone or iPad, one can assume its for another, new device - its rumored 'iWatch.'
