Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall will be transformed into a bowling alley on August 7th and 8th for the 15th annual national Teen Masters  bowling championship that will offer more than $100,000 total in college scholarships. The champion will win the grand prize of $64,000. Grand Central Station, one of New York’s most iconic buildings hosts the Grand Championship for the second year in a row.  This tournament features eight competitors from high schools across the nation, with one chance to showcase their talents to New Yorkers, commuters and tourists alike, as the compete in likely the biggest stage of their lives.  Since the Teen Masters began in 1997, the competition has awarded over $1.2 million in scholarships.

The Teen Masters, created by Killer “B” Promotions founder Gary Beck, is a unique youth tournament, testing player skills on a combination of long- and short-oiled lane conditions as well as bowling equipment limitations which require players to make adjustments in their techniques rather than relying on ball technology.

Each student will be allowed to choose between two Ebonite bowling balls for the competition. “The Teen Masters is about mastering sport and mastering life,” Beck said. “Having the Grand Championship in a location where more than 750,000 people come through every day is a great opportunity for these students to learn how to focus and work hard to achieve their goals. And, for the commuters and visitors, the game is a blast to watch!”

The competition will be split into three parts. The first event is a “round robin” tournament, in which all the boys will play each other once and all the girls will play each other once.  The initial “round robin” matches will be a “best of two,” with a bowler winning a point for winning both games. If the two players tie, the match goes to a sudden death. Two bowlers in each division with the best record from the “round robin” will move on to the first championship match.  The championship matches will be best of three with the best boy and girl bowlers moving on to the third and final round.  This final round will also be best of three with the best boy and girl facing off for the grand prize of a $64,000 scholarship.

The opening ceremony begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, with “round robin” matches all afternoon and beginning again at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. The championship matches begin at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8. On Thursday, Aug. 9, the eight bowlers will have a special New York City treat: the Teen Masters trophy presentation will be on Citi Field before the New York Mets game.

Before making it to the Grand Championship at Grand Central Terminal, the eight students competed in a series of qualifying rounds, with the final 34-game round taking place in Cleveland, OH, earlier this month.

The eight students are as follows:
Aaron Yuratovich, 16, Olathe East High School (Olathe, Kansas)
Melanie Hannon, 16, Maryvale High School (Cheektowaga, NY)
Kamron Doyle, 14, Brentwood High School (Brentwood, TN)
Jessica Davies, 17, Island Coast High School (Cape Coral, FL)
Jacob Ettinger, 18, Centaurus High School (Lafayette, FL)
Haley Rubin, 18, Brandon Valley High School (Brandon, SD)
Greg Young, 16, Viera High School (Viera, FL)
